Atlanta Dream Weather Midseason Adversity, Remain Among the WNBA's Top Contenders

After a blistering start, the Atlanta Dream faced injuries, roster adjustments, and a five-game losing streak. Even through that adversity, the team's depth, leadership, and competitive spirit continue to support its place among the WNBA's top contenders.

After a blistering start to the 2026 season, the Atlanta Dream hit their first real stretch of adversity. But even through injuries, roster adjustments, and a difficult losing streak, there's still plenty of reason to believe this team is built to compete.

A Championship-Caliber Start

Coming into the 2026 season, expectations around the Atlanta Dream were as high as they've been in years.

After a franchise-record 30-win campaign in 2025, the organization made a clear statement during the offseason: keep the core together and add another elite talent. Rather than overhauling the roster, Atlanta doubled down on the chemistry it had already built, re-signing its core while acquiring two-time WNBA All-Star Angel Reese. It was a move that signaled one thing—this franchise believes its championship window is open now. (Atlanta Dream)

The early results backed up that confidence.

Atlanta opened the season as one of the WNBA's hottest teams, quickly establishing itself among the league's best. The ball movement was crisp, the defense was relentless, and nearly every night a different player stepped forward when her number was called.

For much of the first half of the season, the Dream looked every bit like a legitimate championship contender.

Then came the reminder that every long season eventually tests even the best teams.

Every Contender Faces Adversity

Momentum can disappear quickly in professional basketball.

Atlanta's five-game losing streak wasn't simply about one bad night. It became a stretch where close games slipped away, turnovers mounted, and small mistakes proved costly against quality opponents. Losses to the Golden State Valkyries, Washington Mystics, Seattle Storm, and others highlighted just how unforgiving the WNBA can be. (Peachtree Hoops)

But it's also important to keep perspective.

Championship teams aren't defined by whether adversity arrives.

They're defined by how they respond to it.

For a team with championship aspirations, experiencing a difficult stretch in July may ultimately prove more valuable than cruising through the regular season without ever being challenged.

Angel Reese Has Become the Team's Spark

Statistics tell only part of Angel Reese's impact.

Her rebounding numbers, double-doubles, and defensive presence are easy to measure.

The energy she brings isn't.

From the opening tip, Reese plays with an intensity that's contagious. Whether she's fighting for an offensive rebound, diving for a loose ball, celebrating a teammate's basket, or challenging opponents defensively, she brings a level of competitiveness that seems to elevate everyone around her.

To me, that's become one of Atlanta's biggest strengths.

Even on nights when the box score isn't perfect, Reese's presence changes the emotional tone of the game.

She doesn't simply play hard.

She encourages everyone else to match her effort.

It's one of the reasons she already feels like such a natural fit in Atlanta.

The Dream didn't just add another talented player this offseason.

They added one of the league's emotional leaders.

The Frontcourt Is Still Coming Together

Another reason for optimism is that Atlanta still hasn't consistently played with its full frontcourt rotation available.

Brionna "Bri" Jones has been working her way back from a right knee injury, and her return gives Atlanta another experienced All-Star capable of protecting the paint, finishing around the rim, and taking pressure off the younger post players. (Swish Appeal)

Madina Okot has also continued developing during her rookie season.

The former South Carolina standout has shown flashes of exactly why Atlanta invested in her. At 6-foot-6, she brings length, rebounding, and rim protection while continuing to adjust to the speed and physicality of the professional game.

With Reese, Jones, Okot, and Naz Hillmon all capable of contributing meaningful minutes, Atlanta's frontcourt has the potential to become one of the deepest rotations in the league as everyone returns to full health.

The Veterans Continue to Lead

One of Atlanta's greatest strengths is that success doesn't depend on just one player.

Allisha Gray continues to be one of the league's most dependable two-way guards, providing scoring, perimeter defense, and veteran leadership every night.

Jordin Canada remains one of the smartest floor generals in the WNBA. Her speed, decision-making, and ability to control the pace of the game often set the tone for Atlanta's offense. Her recent game-winning layup against Chicago served as another reminder of her value in late-game situations. (Peachtree Hoops)

Meanwhile, former No. 1 overall pick Rhyne Howard continues to command defensive attention every time she steps on the floor. Even during stretches where the shots don't fall, opposing defenses know exactly where she is, creating opportunities for everyone else on the roster.

When those three veterans are playing confidently together, Atlanta becomes incredibly difficult to defend.

Why There's Still Reason for Optimism

It's easy to overreact during a losing streak.

But zooming out tells a different story.

Atlanta remains one of the more talented teams in the WNBA.

The roster still features established All-Stars, an emerging superstar in Angel Reese, one of the league's better point guards in Jordin Canada, a former No. 1 overall pick in Rhyne Howard, experienced veterans like Brionna Jones, and promising young talent like Madina Okot.

That's not the profile of a team that's falling apart.

It's the profile of a team learning how to navigate adversity.

Sometimes championship aspirations aren't built during winning streaks.

They're built during the weeks when nothing seems to come easily.

Looking Ahead

For Atlanta Local, this is only the beginning of our coverage of the Dream.

Over the coming weeks, we'll be taking a closer look at the players helping shape this team, including individual features on Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard, Jordin Canada, Allisha Gray, Brionna Jones, Madina Okot, and others.

Because while this season is ultimately about chasing a championship, it's also about the people wearing "Atlanta" across their jerseys.

And if the first half of the season has shown us anything, it's that this team has the talent, resilience, and competitive spirit to remain among the WNBA's top contenders—even when the road gets difficult.
