Others through sports.
Some focus on politics, culture, neighborhoods, or architecture.
Atlanta Local is taking a different approach.
We're asking a question that sits at the heart of nearly every chapter in the city's history:
How did transportation build Atlanta?
That question has grown into something much larger.
Today, Atlanta Local is announcing the launch of a long-term independent research initiative dedicated to studying Atlanta's economic history through the interconnected lenses of transportation, entrepreneurship, business, infrastructure, and economic development.
This is not a university assignment.
It is not a commissioned study.
It is an independent research initiative driven by curiosity and by a belief that understanding Atlanta's past is one of the best ways to understand its future.
Because if our mission is Connecting Atlanta with Atlanta, we believe we first have to understand what has connected Atlanta for nearly two centuries.
Studying Atlanta's Economic History
Atlanta did not become one of America's leading economic centers by accident.
The city's growth was shaped by decisions involving transportation, infrastructure, entrepreneurship, public investment, business formation, geography, and innovation.
While many people recognize Atlanta for its Fortune 500 companies, thriving startup ecosystem, music industry, film production, airport, and cultural influence, fewer understand the economic history that made those achievements possible.
This initiative seeks to help change that.
Through historical research, economic analysis, interviews, archival records, documentary storytelling, and data-driven investigation, Atlanta Local will examine questions such as:
- Why did Atlanta emerge as the transportation center of the Southeast?
- How did transportation influence business formation and economic growth?
- How did infrastructure shape neighborhoods and commercial districts?
- What industries grew because of Atlanta's geographic and transportation advantages?
- How did entrepreneurs turn transportation access into economic opportunity?
- How did public and private investment influence Atlanta's long-term development?
Rather than simply documenting historical events, this research seeks to understand the economic relationships between them.
Every railroad.
Every streetcar line.
Every highway.
Every airport expansion.
Every entrepreneur.
Every neighborhood.
Each became part of the larger story of Atlanta's economic development.
Transportation: The Engine Behind Atlanta's Growth
One discovery has become impossible to ignore.
Transportation is not simply one topic within Atlanta's history.
It is the thread connecting nearly every major chapter.
Atlanta was founded because railroad lines converged here.
Streetcars expanded the city's neighborhoods and commercial districts.
Interstate highways accelerated regional growth and connected Atlanta to markets throughout the Southeast.
MARTA reshaped mobility across the metropolitan region.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport connected Atlanta to the global economy and strengthened the city's role in aviation, logistics, tourism, and corporate development.
Each transportation investment changed far more than how people traveled.
It influenced where businesses located.
Where families settled.
Where jobs were created.
Where investment flowed.
Where entrepreneurs found opportunity.
The deeper this research goes, the clearer it becomes:
Transportation did not simply move people.
It moved Atlanta's economy.
Measuring the Economic Impact of Black Entrepreneurship
One of the first major studies within this broader initiative focuses on a question that deserves far more attention:
How much did Black entrepreneurship actually contribute to Atlanta's economic development?
Atlanta has long been recognized as one of America's leading centers of Black business ownership.
But beyond individual success stories lies a larger economic question.
How did Black-owned businesses influence employment?
Investment?
Neighborhood revitalization?
Innovation?
Business formation?
Economic resilience?
This research aims to move beyond anecdotal history by examining historical records, business activity, interviews, and economic indicators to better understand the measurable role Black entrepreneurs played in shaping Atlanta's economy.
Just as importantly, it seeks to ensure those contributions become part of Atlanta's documented economic history for generations to come.
The goal is not simply to celebrate the past.
It is to record it, analyze it, and preserve it with the seriousness it deserves.
Studying the Past While Watching the Future
Although this initiative begins by examining Atlanta's history, it is equally focused on where Atlanta is going next.
History is still being written.
One of the central goals of this project is to understand how the next generation of transportation technologies could shape Atlanta's economy just as profoundly as railroads, streetcars, interstate highways, MARTA, and Hartsfield-Jackson did before them.
That future is already beginning to take shape.
The Atlanta Beltline has launched ATL Spoke, an autonomous public transit shuttle pilot connecting the West End MARTA Station with destinations along the Beltline's Southwest Trail and the Lee + White district.
The service gives residents an early look at how autonomous transit could become part of Atlanta's broader transportation network and how emerging mobility systems may address first-mile and last-mile transportation needs.
For many Atlantans, it may appear to be simply a new shuttle.
For this research initiative, it represents another chapter in Atlanta's transportation history.
As Atlanta experiments with autonomous transit, expanded public transportation, logistics innovations, aviation, cycling infrastructure, connected mobility, and other emerging technologies, Atlanta Local will continue studying how those developments could influence business activity, neighborhood access, employment, investment, and economic opportunity.
Just as this initiative asks how transportation built Atlanta, it will also explore how transportation will continue building Atlanta.
Atlanta Local plans to report more extensively on ATL Spoke and the future of autonomous transportation in a separate upcoming story.
Moving Atlanta Forward
The research initiative will also be accompanied by a documentary series titled Moving Atlanta Forward.
The series will take viewers beyond textbooks and into the places where Atlanta's economic history was made.
Historic railroad corridors.
Neighborhood business districts.
Transportation landmarks.
Industrial centers.
Local businesses.
Community institutions.
Alongside entrepreneurs, historians, transportation professionals, business owners, economists, and community leaders, each episode will explore how decisions made decades, and sometimes centuries, ago continue shaping Atlanta today.
History will not simply be explained.
It will be experienced in the neighborhoods, stations, streets, businesses, and public spaces Atlantans encounter every day.
A Research Initiative Built for the Community
Atlanta Local believes knowledge should be shared, not hidden behind academic journals or institutional walls.

Help Atlantans understand not only where the city is today, but how it got here and where it may be going next.
